The popularity of streaming devices and apps can be figured out from the fact that there is a dozen streaming devices available on the market, and God knows how many streaming apps. The list is big and it continues to become bigger with every passing day.
Streaming apps have got all the content to satisfy the entertainment related needs of the users. However, there is a big issue that I don’t know whether streaming service providers have addressed or not, i.e., how to prevent kids from watching content that is inappropriate for them. While there hadn’t been any feature in cable or satellite TV to prevent kids from watching content that was inappropriate for them, so kids used to watch it. But, with the launch of advanced streaming apps, users wanted certain features that bar kids’ access to the content that contains sexual and gore content.
Sling TV, a service that was launched by Dish TV Network has one such feature. I’m thankful to Sling TV to have listened to the requests of the users in order to make some arrangements so that they can prohibit the access of their kids to the content that is not made for them. Parental controls are available on Sling TV and they work in a great way.
Parental Controls in Sling TV
With parental controls, users can lock certain content that is Rated ‘A’ or locks the content that is available for purchase. But, they will have to first activate ‘Parental Controls’ for which,
- They need to launch Sling TV app, then go to ‘Settings Page’ by selecting ‘Setting’ tab or ‘Gear’ icon.
- After that, they will see the option named ‘Parental Controls’, which they need to ‘Enable’.
- They will now be prompted to create a PIN number, which needs to be unique and secure.
- Users can now lock the content based on the rating. They can do that by simply checking the box corresponding to the content that they want to lock.
- They can select ‘Lock’ purchases box to lock movie rentals or any other content that can only be watched after purchase.
With that, the locked content is going to appear with a faded thumbnail and lock icon. If users see these two things on the content, then it is confirmed that the content is locked.
If users want to unlock the content, then they will have to enter the PIN that they have created earlier. After entering the PIN, the selection will become available for streaming.
In case, the user forgets the PIN, then there is an option named ‘PIN reminder’, selecting which will reset the PIN. If ‘PIN reminder’ option is not available, then look for ‘Forgot PIN’ option, as some devices don’t have the former option. If ‘Forgot PIN’ option is not available, then look for ‘Forgot Passcode’ option or any other option similar to these. Take help of Sling TV help and support if possible.
